What is the Modern Warrior?
(Referral/Screening form below)
A modern warrior is a Native American male that can walk in both worlds--the world of his culture and tradition and the world of modern society. Our experience has been that when an indigenous man supplants one for the other dysfunction occurs. This dysfunction comes through addiction, violence, homelessness, helplessness, criminality and ultimately a loss of identity. Our goal is to reunite our native men with their wandering spirit and reclaim his rightful place within his family, community, tribe and nation.
The Modern Warrior program provides a space of healing for Native American men. We are a place where warriors of the past can transcend into the Modern Warriors of today. Re-connection to culture and spirituality allows men to build foundational skills that, with education and opportunity, can be translated into a lifestyle that will assist them in being successful in today's modern world. Participants in the Modern Warrior program will learn skills in recovery, parenting, employment, relationships, education, and community.
We begin this process by addressing the broken spirit of our men when they enter our program. This is accomplished through 1x1 counseling, mentorship, and group counseling. The core groups offered here include Moral Reconation Therapy, Relapse prevention, alcohol and drug education, Culture group, Songs of the Columbia basin plateau area, sweatlodge ceremony and Talking Circle. In addition we allow men from other tribes and areas to bring their own ceremonies and healing to the program as a whole. By doing this we show respect to each man’s identity and respect ourselves by learning from each other. We find that these groups offer the most healing by allowing our native men a chance to process their trauma and addiction with the support of their culture behind them.
Our rotating groups include Positive Indian parenting, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Codependency, Men’s Trauma and Empowerment, mental health skills, journaling, art therapy, Warrior Games, Breaking Free from Criminality, Men’s group, Healing Hearts with Horses and servicing our communities.
Each participant is assessed and placed with a counselor and mentor who most closely matches with what the participant needs. We have a diverse group of counselors and mentors, each with their own unique gifts to help heal our warriors.
Our mission is to use culture as our cornerstone to healing. This is supplemented by evidence-based therapies and traditional talk therapy. By recentering our warriors within their culture and giving them the ability to function in society we create Modern Day Warriors.
Additional Services
In addition to treatment we offer many opportunities for our participants to experience life in sobriety. These include softball, an annual Round Dance, outings to various locations throughout the greater Portland area, attendance at AA, NA, and Wellbriety meetings within the community. We also offer educational resources and resources to access employment upon completion of the program.
By doing this, participants re-learn how to function successfully by finding clean and sober support systems,
identifying and utilizing resources, contributing to the community through service work, and by working to achieve fulfillment
in all areas of their lives (physical health, mental and emotional wellness, cultural and spiritual connection, and healthy socialization). The goal of our approach is to provide participants with skills which can be practiced daily, and support (including mentorship) to guide them through the process. When participants graduate from their programs, they have the skills and confidence to successfully return to their home communities and continue their recovery journeys.
Lodging
Participants in the Modern Warrior Men’s Program and the Inipi Women’s Program stay in our clean and sober lodging
for the duration of the treatment episode. Unlike more restrictive treatment settings usually reserved for high levels of care,
our lodging units provide a unique opportunity for participants in these programs to live in our community and practice
recovery skills in “real-time” while engaging in treatment in our community of Columbia County
MWRS has secured multiple houses in Columbia County to provide lodging for program participants. Each house is accessible to our main offices and the cultural activities building where services occur, and transportation is provided for all program services and activities.
The houses are fully furnished (including laundry facilities), and internet is provided. Participants live with peers in a family-style environment. Purchasing and preparation of meals and maintaining the household is the responsibility of each participant.
Close connections between peers happen in this environment, creating a natural support system that
often lasts long after participants complete their programs.
MWRS Program Lodging is not a permanent solution for those seeking housing. Access to lodging is dependent upon program participation. Upon graduation from services, participants will depart from MWRS to begin their lives in recovery. There is a limited number of beds available for participants with children accompanying parent to treatment. There is also a maximum cap of two children per participant. Once the cap is met for those slots we will not be able to accept any new participants with children.
Termination (for lack of participation or for inability to follow the lodging rules) results in immediate loss of lodging at MWRS.
